I wish I had a piece of cake

I just finished the New York Times bestseller, I was told there'd be Cake, a collection of essays by Sloane Crosley. I've discovered the difference between essays and short stories is that essays are true. These are actual stories from her life growing up in a middle class family in upstate New York. The essays range from her childhood memories at summer camp to silly adventures in her blossoming adulthood. They definitely take on a lighter tone and don't delve too deeply into any serious subject matter. My favorite essay is called 'You on a Stick' and is about her experience with an old friend from high school. She has not seen this friend in over ten years, but one day she gets a phone call, out of the blue, and the old friend asks her to be a bridesmaid in her upcoming wedding. The results are funny and her narrative voice is original. I've never laughed out loud while reading a book before this one. I enjoyed it and it was a quick, light summer read. Perfect while laying by the pool.

I was told there was cake once too and then got to the party and there was nothing. I was very upset and hope that never happens again.
